Notes
  1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
  2. Remove splash shields.
  3. Remove and discard cotter pin.
  4. Remove castellated nut and insulator.

    1. Remove steering knuckle/wheel hub assembly nut.
    2. Remove flat washer, then the cotter pin from ball joint. Discard cotter pin.
    3. Loosen ball joint nut until it contacts outer CV joint.
    4. Strike steering knuckle with hammer while pulling down on control arm until ball joint breaks free from steering knuckle.
    5. Remove ball joint nut, then the stabilizer link to control arm nut.
    6. Using pry bar, separate stabilizer link from control arm.
    7. Carefully pry down on control arm, then separate ball joint from steering knuckle.
    8. Separate halfshaft from hub/bearing assembly.
    9. Position drain pans under transaxle.
    10. Extreme care must be used to ensure prybar does not damage transaxle case, oil seal, outer race or boot. If removing lefthand halfshaft, position prybars on both sides of outer race, between outer race and transaxle case. Gently pry outward to unseat circlip.
    11. After removing lefthand halfshaft, pry circlip off and discard clip.
    12. Remove three halfshaft support bearing retainer to bracket bolts. When removing righthand halfshaft, it is not necessary to remove halfshaft support bearing bracket from engine block.
    13. Pull righthand halfshaft assembly from differential side gear.
    14. Support halfshaft assemblies, then slide out of vehicle. CAUTION : Do not damage CV boots. Place halfshafts on flat, protected work area.
    15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
      1. Original circlip for lefthand halfshaft must not be reused. Install a new circlip. No circlip is used on righthand halfshaft.
      2. To prevent overexpanding clip, install circlip by starting one end of clip in groove and working clip over shaft end.
      3. If installing lefthand halfshaft, position halfshaft so CV joint splines are aligned with differential side gear splines, then push halfshaft into transaxle case. Click will be felt as circlip locks into side gear.
      4. To install righthand halfshaft, push joint shaft into differential side gear.
      5. Torque halfshaft support bearing retainer to bracket bolts to 8-14 ft lb.
      6. Torque ball joint nut to 46-52 ft lb.
      7. Torque wheel hub assembly nut to 174-231 ft lb.
      8. Torque stabilizer link to control arm nut to 12-16 ft lb.
