I have an 89 cadillac fleetwood. My starter went out and was replaced 2 days ago and now it isn''t starting my started was test it''s fine my battery is at 100% could it be a short or relay it wont jump start it just clicks. Recently my steering column was taken off and not put back on right could this have anything to do with it or maybe a conection or linkage problem.

Hello XXXXXXXXX and welcome to just answer, Super mechanic here. I just have a question about your Caddy.

Did you try turning the engine with a socket and ratchet To make sure the engine turns?

Hi, me again. You may have a bad connection at the ground end of the battery cable. I would clean all the connections and make sure that they are tight. If the starter is getting hot and just clicks, it might not be meshing right with the flywheel. Is it a loud click, (clunk) or tick, tick tick?

You had mentioned the steering column. Will the starter turn if you jump the solenoid?

There could be a problem with the switch onthe steering column, but you will want to see if the start will turn when you bypass everything else.

If you don't have a voltmeter, see if the headlights go dim when you try to start the engine.

Answer

If the engine turns good, and the starter is getting hot, battery fully charged then it is either not messing right with the flywheel or the starter has a short in it.

Are you sure the connections are clean and tight?

i am checking that out my so called mechanic is throwing a fit because i am talking to you but the starter is brand new I bought it 2 days ago and my guy took it back and exchanged it again and its still not running but i am positive the starter is good how will i know if its not meshing because he swears he did it right And i appreciate your help so much

Answer

There is one thing that can fool some of the best techs. When you look at the starter, comparing it to the original one. You want to make sure that the gears are the exact same size, with the same number of teeth. Also, the angle of the starter "nose" may look the same but there are some with a slightly different angle where the gear is.

It's kinds hard to put a starter in wrong, there must be something with the actual functioning of the starter.

Reply to Super mechanic's Post: but you dont think it could be anything else besides the fly wheel or connections because he is trying to tell me that its either a relay or one wire from the starter has a short

Answer

What you will have to do is see if the starter will turn the engine when the solenoid is jumped. That will eliminate all other areas of being at fault, unless, it does work then, and just not with the key.
