Question

I have a 10 year old female Akita she was fixed about 3 years ago. My teen age son noticed that her abdomen on the right side was enlarged. I checked her and its tender to the touch and she whines when you get near. She normally is very active and barks when ever anyone opens the gates etc..., but shes been very quiet. She's in pain and I don't know if I can get her to a vet, do they make house calls? The size of the swollen area is about 8" by 6" She about 75-90 lbs I guess.

What color are her gums, tongue, or the conjunctiva of her eyes?

Have you noticed any increased thirst or urination?

Vomiting or diarrhea?

Her gums, tongue, & lips are black & pink. She's an Akita and they're normally that color. I'm not sure what is Conjunctiva eyes? They are responsive to light contracts etc... The reservoir she drinks from is still very full. So she doesn't seem to have been using it a lot. And she's a full backyard Nursery style backyard! She pees when & where ever I saw her do some business #1 about 1-2 hours ago on the grass area. A normal squat & tinkle a little bit. No vomiting or diarrhea. All the land mines are normal looking, but she has a 100 different places to do business. So if its runny I can't say sorry.

Accepted Answer

This mass may be an abscess or very possibly with her age a cancerous mass either in connection with on of her kidney's or other abdominal mass. I don't like her sudden symptoms of lethargy either. So, yes, she will need to see a vet. There are still vets around that do make housecalls but based on her symptoms she will need to be seen. If you can get her onto a blanket you and your son may be able to lift her into the car. Otherwise, I would call someone who can help you. If you are still interested in finding a housecall vet then you can either look in the yellow pages or put a call into your vet who should be able to give you a name. This does come with a significant cost however especially if they have to travel far or after hours. I wish I could give you more specifics as to what is wrong but this mass could be any number of issues and the cancer risk increases with age.

Theresa Thank you for the information. I have placed a number of calls already so I will run the dog to the vet or I'll call in one for a house call tomorrow. Have a good night.
