Unfortunately yes. The responsibility of making sure that all of your bills are being forwarded to you after you move resides in your hands. The collections process allows companies to collect both late payments and fees for all past due bills. Even though Macy's failed to process your address at the time you gave it to them, it was still up to you to call them the following month when you realized you didn't get a bill to be sure the address correction was put in their system

I agree with you but under the law they are not required to be sure that the address change got from the sales clerk to the corporate center. Your best bet (especially if you have been a long time account holder) is to continue up the ladder at the credit department in Macys and push for them to see that it was their error and not yours that started this mess and as a loyal Macy's customer you expected that when one of their clerks was given the new information it would have been out into the system and perhaps you can convince them to waive the late fees. (It sucks I know).
