Question

My miniature schnauzer swallowed two Advil pills this past Thursday. That night she vomited, and seemed fine on Friday, so we fed her. She has been vomiting since, and my vet is not available over the weekend. She drinks water, but doesn''t keep it down. I contacted my vet on Friday and they said to not feed her and just let it work it''s way out of her system. Is she in any danger? Can I wait until Monday for an office visit?

Info Request

Is there any blood in her vomitus?
When was the last time that she vomited?
Is she urinating normally?
If you lift her lip up and touch her gums above her teeth, do they feel wet and slimy or dry and sticky?

There is no blood in her vomit, she is urinating normally, and the gums above her teeth feel dry and sticky.

She vomited during the night and early this morning, do it has been about 21/2 hrs. since she last vomited.

It sounds like she is getting somewhat dehydrated. She certianly at enough advil to cause gastrointestinal problems such as ulceration. This can cause chronic vomiting and dehydration if it goes untreated. She did not really consume enough advil to cause kidney failure, so at least you do not need to worry about that.
Because she is now becoming dehydrated and is unable to keep any water down, I must recommend that you take her to an emergency clinic today to be evaluated. She will most likely need to be put on an IV to receive fluids to help with the dehydration. The vet can also administer an injection of a drug to stop the vomiting and can start her on something called Carafate to coat the gastric mucosa and soothe any ulcers that may have formed.
I hope that this information is of help to you, and I wish you luck with your dog. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Her teeth are chattering. She does this when she is nervous, i.e. thunderstorms. Is this chattering caused by weakness or nerves? She doesn't do it constantly, but when she moves. For example, going outside to urinate and coming back inside. When I pick her up after an outing like this, her teeth chatter. The nearest vet is over 11/2 hrs. away from us over the weekend, since our regular vet is signed out to him. If she continues to drink water, urinate, and stops vomiting, can we wait until Monday to take her to our regular vet? We are seniors, so traveling is difficult for us.

Accepted Answer

Her teeth are probably chattering due to stress and nausea. Because this has been going on for 48 hours now, and she continues to vomit and has become dehydrated (and cannot hold down water), I do not think that it would be wise to wait until Monday. If traveling is difficult for you, you should consider looking in the yellowpages for a veterinarian that makes housecalls. You may be able to find one that comes to your area. Another possibility is to see if a younger neighbor or friend would consider helping you to drive your dog to the emergency clinic.

Good luck,
Dr. K

Thanks for your advice. We found a local vet who was recommended by a neighbor, and would see her immediately. The blood work indicated high levels of phosphorous in the kidneys, so they have begun IV treatments, and have given her something to calm the gastro tract and calm her nerves. I cannot thank you enough for insisting we get her to a vet today. She is not out of the woods yet, but the vet feels she has a good chance if they can get her kidneys flushed.

Thank you again, for your excellent evaluation and advice.
