Question

I have had a hard bump on my inside of my right knee for about 12 years.Never really thought about it until it began aching recently. There seems to be a soft mass around, maybe the tendons over the hard bump. Any ideas? Bone spur, cacium deposit???

Hi I am Dr. April and part of my practice is sports medicine. A bump on the inside of the knee which feels like a soft-tissue mass may be a meniscal cyst. This is a fluid filled mass that extends out from your cartilage. Someone your age with no obvious trauma would not likely have a bone spur or calcium deposit. An x-ray is the first test for this type of problem but may require an MRI if it is a cartilage problem.

Reply to Doctor Mike's Post: I didnt mention that when I was younger I did wack the inside of my knee pretty good while playing bball. It hurt very bad when this happened, but the pain subsided quickly after. Also, when I mentioed the calcium deposit, I was referring to the hard lump underneath the soft mass. If I press on the soft mass I can feel the hard, solid bump underneath it. It's been there for years as well. Would wacking my knee cause this bump and then maybe the soft mass then surrounded it?

Answer

Hi again. How long after the wack did you notice the bump? If there was a close relationship the bump most likely is related to the injury playing basketball. In that case you could have a bruised area that calcified and never went away completely. It may have recently become irritated and become painful. A meniscal cyst is still a possibility. An x-ray would be helpful and would quickly show if the bump is a calcium deposit or not.
