Hi,
Try one of the following methods in order to have the first column included:
- Select the cells in all 5 columns including the first column, then click on Data > Sort, and choose the first column in the 'Sort by' list.
Or,
- Just place the cursor in any cell in the first column, then click on Data > Sort, and choose the first column in the 'Sort by' list.
Let me know if that resolved the issue.

Is your data part of a database created in excel? If so try selecting the data then click Insert > Name > Define, select the defined block, and click Delete.
Let me know.
From your description, it sounds like a list or database has been created using only four columns, but excluding the first column. Now in order to act on the five columns as a block you need to disengage the four columns from the 'list'. To do this select the data in the four columns, then go to Data > List > and select 'Convert to Range'. Now you should be able to sort on any column in the 5 column range.
Hope this helps.
You are welcome. Glad to help.
