Question

I have a 1997 Saturn SC2 with no heat, the fan works at all speeds. I have had the system flushed and pressure tested, new thermostat, new control sensor, new radiator and still no heat. Everyone tells me the heater core is bad but I have 190 deg coolant going in and out of the core. Why no heat???

Accepted Answer

Hello and welcome. I think that is the key to your problem-'190deg going in and out.'

If there were a problem with the temp door in the dash, then no airflow would go over the heater core to cool it. Usually you can hear a change in the airflow when swiotching from cold to hot, or hear the door move. If you confirm the door moves, then once again back to 190 deg in and out.

If the heater core is plugged, then no coolant will flow through it, and the coolant temp on the outlet side would be as hot as system coolant temp justt for the fact it is a hot engine, and all coolant would be the same temp. the heater core is just like a radiator, hot coolant goes in, gets cooled by the airflow over it, then come out the other side not as hot- as long as coolant is flowing.

Reply to Joel's Post: If the temp door was not working and no air flow across the heater core, where does may supper cold as come from?

Answer

Either outside air, if it is cold where you are, or the door is directing airflow over the evaporsator core, and not the heater core. If it is blowing over the heater core, then yes, the heater core is plugged and has no coolant reculating through it.

I'm not a real car buff, where is this airflow door located so I can check this out??

Answer

If you put the fan on high, then switch the temp from full hot to full cold, you should hear a change in airflow, or the door move. The door is controlled by the cable on the temp. control, the csble attaches to a cam on the HVAC housing behind the dash. It is not something thst you csan see. Possible problems, if the door does not seem to move, it the cable is broken, stripped, the cam is broken, or the door is broken. If the door or cam is broken, this is quite an involved repair. much of the dash has to be dissasembled. But agin, this may be a plugged heater core. You must decide if the temp. door in the dash is functional. the temp door deverts airflow over the hester core, evaparator core, or a mix of both, depending on the temp temp. control knob position.
