Hello XXXXXXXXXX, this problem could be caused by any number of different parts. It may be something as simple as a tune up or you may need to replace some sensors. How is the vehicle running and how many miles are on the vehicle?

The car idles terribly. It acts and smells like the mixture is too rich. Once it warms up and gets up to highway speeds, it runs as if there were no problem at all. It has bout 52,000 miles on it.

Answer

Okay, if it smells rich then you are getting too much fuel. You may have a problem with the fuel pressure regulator or a leaking fuel injector. This can also be caused by bad oxygen sensors. Isn't the vehicle still under warranty?
