Question

SES light is on. Code is oxygen sensor malfunction bank1-sensor1. Checked sensor, was ok. Replaced sensor anyways. Cleared codes. Light back on a few miles later. Checked sensor, its ok. Mechanic ran a few tests with a multimeter, found nothing. Car runs fine but has bad mpg. Changed plugs/wires. Cleared code. Drove car for an hr, code then came back on again. Perhaps a short in the wire harness or pcm??? Car is a 98 sable with dohc. 87k miles. Help!

Reply to Chris (aka- Moose)'s Post: Don't have that with me at the moment. Will get it from the mechanic tommorrow. Anything else I should ask him? If it would help, I could provide the phone# to his shop and you could talk to him directly to get more info on what he tried already. He spent a good couple hrs on it already and seems very eager to get this resolved for me.

Reply to Chris (aka- Moose)'s Post: code is P0135. He said he ran all the tests at the connector like his online book stated. Found nothing. Also wiggled the connector while testing but still tested good.

This is a heater concern on the sensor you have been checking. Here is the ford test.

I think he ran all the tests besides the ones with the breakout box because he didn't have one of them. I remember him saying something about that. He couldn't find any problems up to that point. I watched him do all the testing. Would it be possible to perform the breakout box tests without the box? I'm handy with a multimeter and could unplug the harness to the pcm and do a little testing myself. Trying to save costs on this, I've been out of work since nov so money is pretty tight. If it wasn't for the bad gas mileage then I would just leave it. I'm only getting like 15mpg mixed driving which I'm guessing is because of this 02 issue. Also, would you happen to have a pin-out of the actual 02 sensor plug? Thanks for the help so far.

Answer

Yes you can bypass the breakout box and test it via multimeter with the wire diagram I sent.

To do h36 without a breakout box. I would need to know which pins on the pcm are for those tests. Are the pins on the pcm labled? If not then do you have a drawing that shows which pins correspond to the numbers that H36 says to test? Also, is there a drawing of the 02 sensor plug that shows which 4 pins are for what? Thanks!!

Answer

The ford wire diagrams just went down, so I will have to attach a pinout diagram later

If the code isn't in its active state when the tests are carried out then how will I be able to find the problem? For instance the SES light doesn't come on right away right after the code is cleared nor does it come back on at the same time. Which to me sounds like an intermittent problem. I've been doing some searching online and found 2 tsb's that mention a calibration problem for 98 sables. Maybe this is a fix? Tsb # 12603 and 12515. VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0135 OR P0155 CAUSED BY THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE CALIBRATION (PCM). How are tsb's handled for a vehicle no longer on warranty? Would the dealer perform that fix free of charge?

Answer

TSB's are designed only to help techs to help them make repairs quicker and simplier since ford has posted instructions which fit common concerns.

The 2 TSB's you listed are not in affect for your vehicle.

The diagrams are still down at this moment.

Ah ok, I wasn't sure how tsb's work or what exactly they are. Yah please post the 2 diagrams when you get a chance.

Great. Now hopefully I can pinpoint the problem area. I also bought a new egr valve for the heck of it. I bumped into a few reports of people fixing a 02 sensor code by replacing the egr instead. Heh. Maybe I'll get lucky but I sure won't count on that. I thought I was getting bad gas mileage but I just filled up and calculated 18.64mpg. That was with mixed driving and with the winter gas. Not bad. I still want to try to get this fixed. It just bugs me. If I can't find the fix then would it cause any issues to just leave it alone?

Answer

If you cant fix it by yourself it will not cause any damage to leave it alone.

H36 and H37 reference a PCM heater ground wire. Looking at the schematic for the heater part of the sensor. The ground would be the one that goes to the pcm pin#93 right? The other wire is the positive which goes to the relay/fuse correct and would be called VPWR by a chance? Did you happen to find a picture of the 4-pin plug for the sensor so that I know which of those 4 wires are for what? Thanks
