Question

99 E430 just started doing this yesterday... drove it to store, came out, and the starter would engage, but the engine would not crank.... tried it repeatedly and no luck. 30 minutes later it cranked. Drove it 15 minutes to home, and turned it off, then it started back up again twice no problem. This morning it started. Drove it 20 minutes and then idled it in a driveway while I went inside a house for 2 minutes, came back out and it had died. Couldn''t get it to start. Tried again an hour later and it started. It died while sitting at a stoplight on the drive home. Couldn''t start it back up for 30 minutes, then it did start and I drove it home. Any ideas? I have read something so far about a CPS possibly needing to be replaced.

Optional Information:
1999 Mercedes-Benz E430

Already Tried:
tried rotating the key 180 degrees and cleaning the red plastic cover on the key... don't think it is the key though because the starter engages, but I really don't understand the way it all works

XXXXXXXXXXXX,

Welcome to Just Answer!

Heat soak related engine stalling is a common symptom of CPS failure, later after it cools it will start right up. Please also check to ensure that the connector is not loose and firmly seated against the sensor. Without a CPS signal the vehicle will not start, it is a required function the ecu must see.

I believe the e420 is close enough of a model for illustration purposes:
