Question

My small dog, a Bipoo, about 14 lbs. partially ate a hambone 5 hrs. ago. Ate the cartilage and the outer layer of the joint before I got it away from him. He cannot go to sleep for the night. He changes his position every few minutes. This has been going on for three hours now. I believe he is uncomfortable. He isn''t crying or making any sound. He is obviously very tired, but cannot sleep. Is this an emergency? Are there any home remedies I can help with at 2 am? Will he need emergency GI surgery? 3:13 am..He just vomited.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear your dog is uncomfortable, and I would recommend a visit to the ER vet, at this time.

He won't be able to digest what he ate, and that's why he's uncomfortable. The vet will do x-rays to see where the part of the bone he ate, is located in his digestive system, and then give him the most appropriate treatment. You'll have to wait and see if GI surgery is recommended, once your dog is evaluated.

He vomited because he's uncomfortable and the bone may be causing an intestinal blockage.

If you can get him to the ER vet, now, that would be your best course of action.

I hope he's feeling better after he's treated!

The accept button includes "add bonus". I don't want to do that. $15.00 was enough. I could have chosen the cheaper rate as I am retired, but I didn't.

I rated the advice as "good advice" and clicked. Why would't I think that the pet caregiver would be paid?

Hello again, Patricia.

How is your furry boy doing today? I hope he's alright.

Thank you for your 'accept' of my answer; it is greatly appreciated. Adding a bonus is totally optional. When you click 'accept', your deposit is automatically paid to Just Answer, and that's how I get compensated. The system tells us that your 'accept' has gone through, generating payment, so you don't have to worry about that.

I hope your dog will be fine! (no response is needed at this time, unless you'd like to update me on your dog's condition; I'm sending this as a 'request for information', so you're not prompted to click 'accept' again)

Reply to Cher's Post: Hi Cher..Took Teddy to his Vet@ 11:30am. By palpting the abdomen, the Dr. stated that there were still more bone shards left in Teddy's colon. I need to moniter 4 blood in stool. If that occurs, treatment is required via oral Rx to help heal "ulcers" that could be created by this entire process. The Dr. used an instrument that looked like a curette to obtain a stool specimen from the rectum. It contained bone shards. That means, obviously, that the shards are being passed. According to the Dr., the reason Teddy was awake all night is because it is very painful for the shards to exit the stomach and pass thru the small intestine. We were up ALL night! I am supposed to offer small am't of kibble and water as always. He hadn't been drinking. I filled a syringe with H2O this am and made him drink 2.5 cc. I feared dehydration > hard, dry stools. He's drinking now. Poor little guy! Bad mommy. Last night I thought I had killed him! Thank you for your assistance in the middle of the night when I feared the worst. Pat

Hola Cher..Yo creo que usted tiene el $15 ahora. Si non, escribe me. Yo soy enfermera, retired. Quando yo trabahaba en el centro de salud en Riverhead, Long Island, NY, you estudiaba espanol en Suffolk Community College, porque, hay muchos pacientes que hablan solimente Espanol. If you don't use it, you lose it! I'm retired now and not using my Spanish. I lived on Long Island for all of my life and I miss it and NY. Enjoy the warm Florida sun. It's below zero now, in daylight, where I live. Colder at night. Que le vaya bien! Patricia

I also miss NY; ok, not the very cold, snowy, icy winters, but the 4 seasons. It's been nice here, recently, after a batch of rain, but the winter is the best season, especially when it gets 'cooler' (sometimes, even cold!) and I LOVE it!

I'm so glad to hear your report re: Teddy, and that he's seen the vet. Yes, sharp bone shards are always of concern with this type of ingestion, but I'm glad he's passing them in his stool. Since you're a medical professional, you know to keep him hydrated, so that's great!

Well, keep me posted on how he's doing, and I'll send you a 'private message', so you can send me updates that way.

I hope Teddy will be feeling like his old self, real soon!

Hi Cher...nice of you to respond. Teddy is ALL better!! He is eating, drinking and playing as he used to. I just have to keep watching for blood in his stool. If all goes well, he will just have to go for his annual check up in April. I am SO relieved. I thought I had killed him by neglect, ie. not keeping track of him and his getting into the garbage. I love him dearly. He's my buddy, my shadow.

You worked at great places in the Bronx. I don't think NY winters are very cold/icy anymore. Global warming. Lately, they have had temps in the 40's. That's warm compared to Minnesota. I live in the city of the Mayo Clinic and it's two hospitals. Famous people from all over the world come here for diagnosis, treatment and even their annual physical.

One hour away in Minneapolis, is the Mall of America...the hugest in the country. If you ever want to come to either Rochester or Minneapolis, let me know. I'll show you around.

Best Wishes, Pat...Patricia Gundersen

Hi again, Pat, and thanks for your reply,

I'm so glad Teddy is feeling all better and acting normally! Yes, make sure he either can't get to the garbage, or that you have a really good, tight-fitting lid on it. Dogs LOVE to get into the garbage!

Minnesota sounds great, being in the city with Mayo Clinic (is that where you worked?) and having the Mall of America one hour away. I didn't work in those hospitals in the Bronx, my sister did; what I had said is she's also a nurse and that's where she worked. We grew up in the Bronx, and then I lived in Bayside after marriage, and have a lot of friends on the Island. Yes, you're right, the winters have been milder recently, but they still got a lot of snow this year and pretty frigid temps...nothing compared to MN, but....

I hope Teddy continues to act like himself and stay on the road to wellness!

Cher : )
