Question

My 3 1/2 yr old GSD has what appears to be on again off again conjunctivitis (i.e. Runny, deeply blood shot eyes). He one day has it and the next day it is gone....and then comes back. He roams about freely on our farm, but for the most part stay in when we are in and out when we are out. His vision appears un affected at this time and we would like to keep it that way. Any ideas as to what this may be caused by?

Info Request

Is there any mucus or pus buildup in the eyes? Does he seem sensitive to light, or does he squint a lot?

Thanks,
Drew

OK, thanks for the information.

It is very possible that he has some allergies, and allergic conjunctivitis, especially if he spends a lot of time outdoors.

A topical over the counter allergy drop is Naphcon-A, which is safe to use in dogs, and may help reduce the intermittent redness.

If at any time, he seems to have lost any vision, or squints, or seems uncomfortable, I would strongly recommend having your veterinarian take a close look at his eyes.

If you have further questions, just ask!

Answer

That is it's brand name. The generic name is naphazoline, if I recall correctly.
