Question

My 4 year old Pit Bull/Beagle mix gets raised bumps on her belly, chest, and under her arms. They get crusty, and I can pick off the whitish crusts, and underneath they are bright red.   They don''t seem to be itchy or painful, and she doesn''t have any hair loss. I''ve used Fresh & Clean Medicated Shampoo once a week for about a month. I also use Fresh & Clean Oatmeal and Baking Soda conditioner with each bath. After baths, the bumps are bright red, and the crusts come back a few days later. Also, at times, she "turns red," with the redness being obvious around her nares, the inside of her ears, her flews, her gums, and her belly skin. It doesn''t really seem to bother her, so I don''t really worry too much, but are these symptoms of a more serious underlying disease? We''ve been to the vet a few times, sometimes Malsaeb works, sometimes it doesn''t

Optional Information:
Age: 4; Female; Breed: Pit Bull/Beagle (probably)

Already Tried:
Malsaeb, Fresh&Clean Medicated Bath, Gentamycin spray. All of these have some effectiveness, but it always comes back. I don't know if the meds are effective or if it's just a come and go cycle.

Hi Mrootm,

It sounds like an allergy condition to me. This could be a yeast or staph dermatitis. This frequently caused by an allergy. Changing your dog’s food could help, as some dogs are allergic to common grains found in dog food. . Your Vet will probably prescribe antibiotics and a change in food. If your dog is currently eating a dog food high in corn or wheat, I’d change him to one that does not contain them as these are the more common ones found to cause problems. Staph usually occurs on the lower regions of your pet and tends to have small pimple type bumps. Shampoo containing Chlorhexiderm and/or Oatmeal can help with this condition though it does not cure the allergy. Yeast typically shows as a greasy area that has a sweet musty odor. Sometimes the skin can become inflamed, darker and thickened due to itching. Yeast likes areas such as between toes, armpits and ears. Selsun Blue Shampoo can help with Yeast dermatitis. When shampooing, lather and leave on 15 minutes before rinsing. Your Vet though will make the final determination.
