Answer

HI icosad,

The most common reason for sudden lack of appetite , vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy is an obstruction of the bowel. If the pups has eaten a non food item such as raw hide, bone, toys, stick etc. then you may be looking at a blockage. A blockage can come from any household item the pup may have eaten, it does not have to be what you know you have given him. I am going to direct you to a site for this and it will go over symptoms and explain what happens with an obstruction.

Since she is up to date on shots then parvo can be ruled out. If she has gotten into the garbage at all of has eaten any fatty human food sucha s steak, ham gravy, etc. then this can cause pancreatitis. This would require a 24 to 72 hour fast with an IV drip to keep the dog hydrated.

Thank you for responding.

I plan on taking her to the vet as soon as they open today. I have typed up a time line and symptoms, as well as her shot record and what I have done to try to help her.

I had thought of it being an obstruction, but have also been reading up on other things that could cause her symptoms. She is a nosey little thing, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I don't think it is Pancreatis, for the main reason that she is very trim and athletic as well as being young. Not to be ruled out though.

I was ready to take her to the vet Mon morning, but she got up and was running and playing with the other dogs and actually nibbled a little. During the day she started drooping and now is jsut miserable. I have stayed up all night with her.

Is the prognosis pretty good with either problem?

Accepted Answer

Yes, an obstruction woud require surgery to get the object out and with pancreatitis sometimes only a short fast is all that is needed.
