My two young (one about 3 mos old, one about 2 mos old) male gerbils seem to suddenly be fighting. The younger, slightly smaller one is chasing the one I had thought to be dominant around the tank. I am worried they will hurt each other. This doesn't look like their normal plat at all - it seems tense and wild in there! Help. My son would be devastated if they hurt each other. They were properly introduced about 5 weeks ago by the breeder. What is going on and should I worry about it. I hesitate to intervene/separate them until I get some guidance as I don't want to further alienate them. Help! My 5-yr old son is devoted to these guys!

Question

Hello,

Unfortunately in all amimal species there is the possibility of a conflict between males of the species for dominence. This is what I am afraid is happening with your two gerbils. Many times this becomes a territorial issue and one or both of the Gerbils can be injured. My suggestion would be two separate enclosures to keep the two males on their own. This will alleviate the problems of possible injury to one or both of them. You can keep them close by one another, but with independant enclosures they should calm down and even become better pets for your son. Joan
