Question

I have recently noticed rough bumps on my cat''s skin. They are located primarily by his ears and on his chin. The little information I could find online suggested that he might be suffering from warts of papilloma, but they said that is rare among cats. I have also noticed that small plugs of his hair is coming out with what appears to be hard, crusty skin hold the plugs together. What is wrong with my cat?

Answer

Hi,

From your description, it's possible that your cat could have feline acne, ringworm, ear mites or fleas.

Feline miliary dermatitis is a flea-related skin condition which will cause the skin to feel like it has tiny, rough bumps.

Even if your cat is indoor-only, fleas are still possible, as they're brought in on humans' clothing and shoes.

There are other skin conditions possible, so bring your cat to the vet for evaluation, ASAP, and once a diagnosis is made, he will be treated to resolve the problem.

I don't think, at this point, you have to worry about papilloma, but a skin scraping (painless) by the vet, will reveal more information.

I hope all will be well!
