This website looks like it could be useful if you put in a request for information, or if you actually visited to U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center. The best part is they offer service to official and unofficial patrons.
If you are looking for the head shot of a soldier who has passed, then you might want to check the library in their former hometown for newspaper archives. Chances are if there was a story written about their passing, there was a head shot featured with the article.
This forum post has some great suggestions that you may find helpful in your hunt for that photo. (http://forum.gruntsmilitary.com/viewtopic.php?p=26145)
Knowing their unit and having their ID will definitely help you in your search. If you don't have this information, then you might try a few genealogical resources to try and find this information.
You might try doing a search on this website (http://dodimagery.afis.osd.mil/) of their name or unit (if you know it).
This quote from www.ancestry.com sounds promising:
"Shortly following WWII, a series of commemorative yearbooks featuring photos and short bios of soldiers was published, primarily in the Southern and Eastern United States. Ancestry.com's collection includes approximately 60,000 soldiers, from all known editions of the yearbooks. Bios include soldier's name and birth date, spouse and parents' names, religion and more. Start searching for your ancestors in Young American Patriots Military Yearbooks below."
You usually have to sign up for their service to get any extensive amount of information from their site, but if you really want that photo, it might be worth it to you to pay for the search.
This website might also be a great resource for you, they claim to have some military yearbooks and they have a long list of names on the site that I am guessing they have information on. (http://www.accident-report.com/ports.html)
I really hope this helps you! Searching for military yearbooks appears to be the most promising route to take in your quest. I really hope you find the photo you are looking for! Thank you for using Just Answer!
