Question

Thank God I found this site. I have a 9yo english mastiff. I have always watched his weight and his average weight is 180. He started vomiting about 2 months ago. The vet checked him out no worms and said to start him on something like Maylox and not to give him his joint pill with bread any more and to put him on food for older dogs. Well I tried to change his food and he would NOT eat it so I went back to his regular brand. I stopped the bread and started his stomach med. He continued to vomit just not as often. He started vomiting yesterday and has continued all today. I was gone all day today. Since I have returned home he is just laying around, did not come in to the table while we ate, did not stay with me while I cleaned the kitchen, did not beg for ice cubes ( my dogs think they are the best treats), he hasn''t vomited since I''ve been home, he hasn''t gone outside to potty, his respirations are at about 44, his nose is warm and dry, doesn''t seem happy. Husband gave him Pepto

Reply to Gina's Post: His food is Ol Roy Kibbles and Chunks, he has eaten this for over 5 years. While he was a puppy he ate Ims large breed puppy. His joint pill is glucosamine chondroitin combo he has used this for at least 6 months. At his age he was starting to have some painful stiff joints and this is what my vet recommended.

Answer

He may have developed a food intolerance as Ol Roy is full of corn and other fillers and its not uncommon. I do recommend a senior health check including bloodwork for him to check on his liver functions. His respirations are a bit high, which can indicate pain. If there is any tummy swelling or painful to the touch, he should be seen by an er vet immediately. If not, see if you can give him some boiled chicken breast..no seasonings or bones. This will help settle his tummy and consider switching to a different food that does not contain corn. I feed my babies eagle pack duck and oatmeal variety..most dogs love it. :) Let me know how you make out with him and if he refuses the chicken, or continues with the vomiting, have him seen today :)

Reply to Gina's Post: He continued to retch through the night and stopped early this morning. He is now up moving around and begging for treats at the kitchen counter, went outside and drank some water. I fixed him some rice in chicken broth with an eggs swirled in. I was going to give him a cup or two every couple hours. Thoughts?

Accepted Answer

I would hold off on the broth as it is higher in sodium and not the eggs...sick with boiled chicken and rice...its very easy on the tummy and easily digested. :) I would do that every couple of hours and see how he does. :)
