Question

Lately my car has been reaching a very hot level, on the gauge and I see smoke coming from the engine. Is the thermostat bad or is is my radiator? What are the steps for me take in order to fix this myself?

Answer

You need to allow the engine to get totally cold, make sure the coolant level is full with the engine running and the heater on. Allow the engine to run while feeling the temp on both radiator hoses, one hose should stay cooler than the other until the temp gauge gets near the middle - if the other hose gets to be the same temp after the gauge reaches the middle then your thermostat is working ( also make sure you are getting heat inside from the heater ). If the hose stayed cooler then the thermostat is bad. Next you will want to make sure that the cooling fans are coming on once the temp gauge starts to pass the middle. With the cooling system full you will also want to look the engine area over for any coolant leaks .
