I have a 1999 BMW 323 IS. Could not start car. Key turned, lights came on but car didn''t. seemed like lock or key was broken. I had it towed to certified BMW mechanic who says STEERING LOCK AND KEY TUMBLER NEED TO BE REPLACED. Is that normal to have a steering lock malfunction? I only keep 1 key on my keyring for the car. Don''t see how I could have damaged the steering lock. Please advise. Don''t want to get ripped off.

Your not getting ripped off, This is a somewhat common thing to happen. It is not your fault, nor could it have been prevented. Parts just fail sometimes.
