Question

while caring for my 7 yr. old grandson this weekend, he seems to be groggy and has a very fast (125 bpm) heartrate. He is on adderall. Is this okay or is it a cause for alarm?

Accepted Answer

While Adderall can indeed cause an increase in heart rate, his heart rate is normal for a 7 year old. The only thing here that concerns me is the "groggy". That would be unrelated and is sometimes a sign of a serious problem.

He is on a dosage of 30 mg. of the Adderall XR. He is very small, weighing only 42 lbs.and 41 inches tall. He doesn't have any appetite and tells us he has pain in his chest after running in gym.

Answer

30 mg a day is on the high end For a 42 lb child but not extraordinarily so. It does indeed significantly decrease appetite in many children. There are MANY possible causes of chest pain ; most in this age group are not serious.
