Question

Hi, my 7 year old maltese is wheezing, sneezing and her eyes are running. She is very itchy, rubbing herself on the furniture and carpeting. Could this be an alergy?

I gave her 3/4 of a teas. or 4 ml just once a couple days ago. It seemed to help, but now she seems worse. She is about 6 1/2 pounds.

Accepted Answer

Hello,

The normal dosage for Benedryl is 1-2 cc or mgs per pound of body weight every 12 hours. The problem is that she was underdosed with the Benedryl, so it is wearing off. She could actually take 1/2 a bendryl tablet every 12 hours. or two teaspoons full every 12 hours as a maximum dosage of 2mgs or cc's. Since this is so bad if she has not had any Benedryl today you can try giving it to her at 1-2 mgs per pound of body weight. This should help. Allergies can be inhaled, ingested or a contact allergen. She may be getting affected when she goes outside. I would see the Vet tomorrow and use the Benedryl today to help give her relief. I hope this will put your mind at ease and the Benedryl will make her sleepy, but should help her to feel better. Joan
