Question

My 6 month old male weimaraner has had diarrhea for 1 1/2 wks. Seen by vet who said give chicken noodle soup with brown rice, then gradually adding back a few pieces of his Flint River puppy/adult kibble as well as some cooked ground turkey w/one packet of Purina fortiflora per day. His stools were starting to get less watery until I started adding back in the kibble. He acts like he is feeling decent, drinking water, playing a little, chewing on his bully stick, but mostly sleeping. I have also been giving him dried Nana Flakes (banana) in his food as that is supposed to help with diarrhea. He has always been on the skinny side, but now is extremely skinny, hips and ribs extremely prominent. Spoke to vet again yesterday, he wants to do more diagnostic tests, but due to the holiday (new year''s) appointment is not until Wednesday. Vet wants to rule out possibility of Weimaraner Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. I am really concerned about how skinny he is and what I sh/be feeding him now.

Already Tried:
Chicken noodle soup with brown rice, holistic pill called early comfort supplied by vet. after about 4 days of soup and rice, started adding 1/4 cup Flint River adult/puppy kibble (what he has been eating prior) 1 packet per day of Purina's Fortiflora (vet recommended) couple tablespoons per day of Nana Flakes added to food. Started yesterday adding cooked ground turkey to soup and kibble, feeding about 1/2 cup total volume every 3-4 hours during day. Yesterday had 4 small meals. He had diarrhea (explosive watery)before breakfast then did not have bm until around 9pm, then again at 5am today.

I'd pull him back off the kibble.
An over the counter med you might try would be Pepcid or Tagamet or Zantac.
Be sure to tell the vet when you see them if you use any of these.
You can read about dose amounts (and cautions) scrolling down on the pages here

If that helps then you can see if some bland food and plain pedialyte added to the water bowl will help.
I would suggest trying boiled chicken meat or hamburger with the fat drained off, mixed with really well cooked rice in a ratio of 1/3 meat to 2/3 rice to see if that works. It's not a balanced diet but OK to use for a few meals while working on controlling digestive upset.
I'd suggest having your vet check him for intestinal parasites such as giardia or coccidia. I've had good luck treating non specific diarrhea with metronidazole (Flagyl) an antibiotic drug used against anaerobic bacteria including coccidia and giardia.
Check the food label on the Flint river food. It may be your dog is not doing well with wheat or another ingredient.
You could see if a food such as California Natural Chicken and rice will work as it has very few ingredients and matches what the dog does OK with on the home cooked diet.
Hope this helps you!
