Question

I Just lit my Gas burning Fireplace and instead of the Flame(s) Being Yellow, It is all blue. I thought I heard somewhere that the Blue indicates the hottest part of the fire. What can I do to remedy this? Is it harmful? Is this an indication of Carbon monoxide?

We Just bought the House. It doesn't look like it has been used before but I could be wrong. I assume the Fireplace was put in when the house was Built and it is about 13 or 14 Years old

Accepted Answer

The flame should never be yellow. A yellow flame indicates the fuel is not being burned property.

  1. It is all blue. This is good since it indicated the gas is burning correctly.
  2. I thought I heard somewhere that the Blue indicates the hottest part of the fire. This is correct.
  3. What can I do to remedy this? Nothing needs to be done.
  4. Is it harmful? As long as the fire place is vented properly it should be safe.
  5. Is this an indication of Carbon monoxide? No but the fireplace will produce Carbon Monoxide when it is burning.

Many homeowners do not realize, the complications of not having a professional inspect the fireplace system yearly. If a fire, or worse, is caused by the fireplace and there are no records of the fireplace being maintained, the insurance company can and will deny the claim for damages.

From what you have told me I do not believe there is a problem but it is always best to have a professional inspect the fireplace and the venting system to insure trouble free operation.
