Hello Craig,
It's very difficult to tell since scammers have found so many clever ways to get around getting caught. Now they will talk to a potential "mark" for many months before trying their scam, they call them "love scams". They almost always have some type of death of a family member that they talk about to make you feel sorry for them, and eventually when it comes time to "meet", you will shell out some money, whether its for a plane ticket or some other cost that they claim they have to pay in order to leave the country. They will offer to show you plane tickets, travel plans, etc, all in an effort to prove they are real.
There's no real way to tell if you're being scammed, thats why its best never to give out your personal information, offer to give anyone money, or to send or receive things by mail. If they really love you, they wont ask for money, and will still love you if you tell them you don't have it. Some scammers are asking for cell phones, or other items, they will send you the money for them, and you send the phone to them...these phones can be used by terrorist cells and cant be traced back to the terrorist cells, but to you!
I wouldn't say stop talking to her, but don't give out your info, and wait to see if she asks for money, or cries about something she needs money for , or hints how something happened in her life that she doesn't have the money for. The best ones will never ask, but make you think you should offer.
I hope this helps, and if you want to talk more, just let me know.
