JA: What's the exact make and model of your printer, and can you guesstimate how old it is?

Usually this happens because the computer program asked to print on a type of paper that the printer does not think is in the lower tray so it switches to the upper tray and tells you to fill it.

check in the printer settings on the printer what it thinks is in each tray

and then confirm at print time under options on the print window on the computer that you are printing to the same kind of paper.
