Getting a smeared section on my output -- vertical smearing of a narrow width. (I own a MF227dw.) I tried to run the "Clean Fixing Assembly" routine from the "Adjustment/Maintenance" menu, but after I load paper and press the start button, I immediately get a "Cleaning Failed" message on the display.
JA: What's the exact make and model of your printer, and can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: It's a Canon imageClass MF227dw, and it's about three months old.
JA: What kind of computer are you printing from (Mac or PC)? What Operating System (OS) are you running?
Customer: Mac, OS 10.12.1
JA: How long has this been an issue? What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: Didn't notice the smearing until yesterday. The error message is new: I've never tried it until now. When I pressed start, I immediately heard 6 rapid beeps, and the error message popped up. Nothing else happened
JA: Anything else you want the printer expert to know before I connect you?

Does the smear happen when copying or printing or both?

Could you attach a scanned image of a page with the smear?

My question isn't about the smearing per se; it's about getting the "Clean Fixing Assembly" function of the printer to work.

Ahh ok, the "CLEANING FAILED" error can be caused by two things:

Cause 1: A paper jam occurred in the machine while the fixing unit is being cleaned.

Action: Clear the jammed paper, and then load paper again. Check for any stuck pieces of paper, staples, paperclips, etc.

Cause 2: The toner ran out completely while the fixing unit was being cleaned.

Action: Replace the toner cartridge with a new one.
