I reinstalled Windows 10, reinstalled the printer driver, and now the printer hangs up while printing.
JA: What's the exact make and model of your printer, and can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: Dell 964 All in One from 2005. and I had it working with windows 10 before.
JA: What kind of computer are you printing from (Mac or PC)? What Operating System (OS) are you running?
Customer: PC Windows 10
JA: How long has this been an issue? What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: I took my computer to the shop and they reinstalled Windows 10. I reinstalled the driver and it will print an alignment page, but when I try to print something else, it hangs up.
JA: Anything else you want the printer expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: No. I had it printing with Windows 10 before the reinstall.

Can you please remove the power to the printer (so unplug it from the power socket).

Then wait 10 minutes, connect the power again to the printer, turn it on and tell me please if it is now operating correctly.

connect it to a different USB port on your computer and tell me if it then prints please.

Doesn't print, I try to delete it and and it doesn't delete the print job.

ok, disconnect the USB cable to the computer

restart the computer again to clear it.

Then click start, type in

devices and click on

devices and printers.

Right click the printer and select remove.

Once done, restart the computer

Then connect the printer, go back to devices and printers.

Click on Add printer

Add it when it appears and then restart and now try to print please.

Can you press the windows key and X

Click on command prompt (admin)

A black window will open.

Type in it

sfc /scannow

press enter and when it has completed, type in

chkdsk /r

Press enter.

It will give a message "the type of the file system is NTFS cannot lock current drive.

chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts y/n" Say Y, press enter and restart the computer.

Please note, while this normally only takes 10 minutes to run, it can take at times number of hours if windows encounters many issues. If this is occurring it is critical to let this complete as it means you have corruption on the hard drive that it needs to fix. Even if it looks like the scan is not progressing, it is, please just let it run to completion. Windows will then start when it has.

chkdsk gets stuck at 10%, and I looked up on my iPad that it can take hours to run in that case. So I chose to stop it. Do think I should try again? Is there a way I can tell if it is running?

I found a way to get to this page with my iPad. Chkdsk is still showing it's at 10%.

I see that my debit card has been charged $18 in addition to my $5 deposit. I understand that I am taking up your time, but I don't want to be charged a lot of money while I am waiting for chkdsk to run.
