Also, have you tried scanning from the flat-bed glass, and does scanning work from there?

The service manual for your printer is available here: It is a combination manual that covers a number of different MFCs including yours.

You will need to enter maintenance mode by following the procedure on page 9-1 of the above manual. Then skip to page 9-23 and follow the procedure there to test the ADF sensors. If the sensors indicate paper present or a jam, you will have to try to get at the sensors and make sure they aren't stuck.
