Hello, I am pleased to have the opportunity to assist you. My name is ***** ***** I can help you solve your problem. What is your computer operating system? You can display the version of OSX by selecting the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok checking is X El Capitan version 10.11.4
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Sorry OS X El Capitan
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Are you using a wireless connection to your printer?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I have a little wireless device but don't know what to plug it into - the Mac?
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
That was what we used before we moved
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Is the computer that you are using for this conversation connected to your wireless network?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Hi it's a wireless device yes so the printer can talk to the computer. I think it used to be plugged in to ou Dell computer but I'm not using that now
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Your Mac computer and your Canon MX870 are both wireless. Can you describe this little wireless device you are talking about. How big is it . Wat is it called. Who is the manufacturer, and what is the model number?

Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

I just got your message about the Dell computer. The wireless device is a usb network card for the computer that you are no longer using. WE can ignore that now.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok that makes sense
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Any hope for my Mac and Canon or am I missing something
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Yes. Now we can work on both of them.

Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

The first thing to do is to use the control panel on the printer to connect it to your wireless network.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Is there a Network button on the control panel? If not, can you find the Network menu on the display?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
No
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Can you help connect it remotely ?
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

We will find the Network menu together. Please standby while I check the documentation.

Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

I apologize for the delay. I am downloading your manual now.

Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

I have the manual now. Do you have a usb printer cable that we can use for setting up your network connection?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
A usb printer cable? I'm not sure what you mean. I have wireless internet
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
My network connection?
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
At&t
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Yes, I know. But your printer does not have a fully capable hardware control panel. The network setup is done instead in software on your computer, and it requires the temporary use of a usb printer cable. If you do not have one, you can buy one at any convenience store for around $10. If you need to get one, we can continue this tomorrow or Sunday.

Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Or later tonight, if you prefer.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I probably have one - ok, may have to pick up conversation when my son and husband are back- how would that work?
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Okay. Sure. Do you want to take a break now and pick this up again tonight?

Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

If you get disconnected from this conversation, you can just select the link in your notification email.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok let's try later I'll look for printer cable
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

Sounds good. Copy that.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok!
Expert:  Joel Kalman replied 7 months ago.

I will look for you later.
