I just changed the toner cartridge on my HL-5340D and there are three black dots on each printed page

If the pattern of black dots (three) always repeats itself identically down the page, then you probably didn't have a bad toner cartridge, but rather, a defective (slightly scarred or dinged) drum. It is damage to the drum that always repeats exactly as a pattern on each page, in this sort of printer.
