Epson stylus NX300 the fax mode seems to be stuck in a cycle

Epson stylus NX300
the fax mode seems to be stuck in a cycle of ringing and connecting with no results.
this has been going on for about two (2) hours.
I am not currently trying to fax anything although I did Wednesday with good results.
the only other thing I may have done to cause this is to put on a new telephone cable from the wall to the printer.
the cycle started immediately after this.

Hi, thank you for contacting JustAnswer.com. My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

Take that 'new' telephone cable away, and put in the old one, or any other cable. It is almost certainly shorted out or otherwise defective, and seems to have put the fax electronics into this fit of odd behavior.

While doing that, turn the Epson device Off. And leave it Off for at least 10 minutes, even after connecting the old (or, other) phone cord.
