I have a canon pixma ip4200 and the waste absorber if full - what do I do and where is the ink absorber?

You can follow the steps below to reset the printer and the Waste ink counter.But, if you do something wrong then the printer may get damaged.So, do it at your own risk.

1) With the printer power turned off, while pressing
the Resume/Cancel button, press and hold the Power
button. (DO NOT release the buttons. The Power LED
lights in green to indicate that a function is

2) While holding the Power button, release the
resume/Cancel button. (DO NOT release the Power

Resume/Cancel button 2 times, and then release both
the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons. (Each time the

Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and
Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power
in green, starting with Alarm LED.)

4) When the Power LED lights in green, press the
Resume/Cancel button the specified number of

I thought there was an absorption pad I had to clean and replace as well
Yes, it can be done also.But, to that you have to take your printer to the service center because, to replace the ink pads you have to completely dismantle the printer and which is not possible at home.

Thank you! How often can you safely re-set the waste ink counter before it needs to go to the service centre
You can as many times as you wish.But, I will recommend to replace the waste ink absorber after resetting the printer for 3 to 4 times.
