This error is caused by a problem with a memory dimm chip that is normally used by the fax. In order to fix this that chip would need to be replaced. If you have never done this before I suggest having a technician do it because if done improperly it can damage the machine even further.

I have located three memory dimm chip slots; two are occupied, one is empty.

Are these the correct chips?

And, if so, should I replace them? What are the complications?

We primarily want to use the machine as a "copier."

Whatever you may share that can get us up and running....with a minimum financial output, would be greatly appreciated.

Before replacing them try using one in each slot and see if you get the same error. It could be that one of the slots is damaged or that only one of the chips has failed. Make sure to do it with the machine off and unplugged. Also touch something metal before touching anything inside the machine. A static electricity shock can cause the main board to fail which is the most expensive part in the machine to replace. If you have one wearing a esd wristband is the best thing. Before inserting them into the slots again blow out any dust as well with compressed air. Dust build up can cause these errors as well.
