I think there is a lock on the left side. look very close. The lock is for shipping. Its just a little slide/switch

the only switch I see on the left side is the on/off switch

Check your green scanner lock which is under the scanner area right in that area where your copies comes out of the machine. This is the most common cause of the "scanner locked" condition. The lock gets accidentally engaged as it is located right where you reach in to get your copies.
If the lock is not the problem then you may have a scanner drive issue

ok... I found the green switch and it is locked but I can't get it to move to unlock... any suggestions?

You should also see a diagram of locked and unlocked padlocks. Just slide the switch to the unlocked position.
