Hi,

First make sure that you have removed the plastic tape from the cartridge.

  • Follow the steps listed below to check the print quality and clean the print head.

    1. Press the Ink or Ink Management button.

    2. Press the up or down arrow key to choose Test Print. Press OK.

    3. Press the up or down arrow key to choose Print Quality. Press OK.

    4. Press Color(Colour) Start.
The machine will print the Print Quality Check Sheet. .

    5. Check the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet.

    6. The LCD asks you if the print quality is OK.
      Do one of the following:

      • If all lines are clear and visible, select Yes and go to Step 10.
      • If you can see missing short lines as shown below, select No.

    7. The LCD asks you if the print quality is OK for black and the three colors. Select Yes or No.

    8. The LCD asks you if you want to start cleaning. Select Yes. The machine starts cleaning the print head.

    9. After cleaning is finished, press Color(Colour) Start. The machine will print the Print Quality Check Sheet again and then return to step 5.

    10. Press Stop/Exit.

If you repeat this procedure at least five times and the print quality is still poor, let me know.

Hi Alex,

From the symptoms you are getting, its quite evident that the black ink print head is faulty.

If you already tried cleaning the print head / cartridge then there are only two possiblities :
1. The print heads are worned out with usage.
2. The cartridge you bought is faulty (less probable)

Your printer is in warranty then you should get it repaired by Brother for free.

To be very honest, these print heads are made of poor quality so that you need to replace them and Brother can make money. Thats why they sell cartridges at cheaper cost.

Feel free to ask any question or concern you may have. I will be glad to help you.
