Customer Question

2008 boxster s, 37,000 miles, rasping sound just started when i turn steering wheel. service adviser at dealer said it came from front suspension and happened to some boxsters. he said that it was only an annoyance and did not require maintenance. if he is correct, what exactly in the suspension is causing it and why would it not require maintenance?

PorscheDoc :

Hello, I'm Jason. I will do my best to answer your question quickly and accurately using the information you have provided.

PorscheDoc :

almost like a squeaking type of noise coming from the front end when you turn the wheel back and forth?

PorscheDoc :

if so, it's likely the lower ball joints on the end of the lower control arm. Currently if they're just squeaking and not loose or clicking around, then yes it's just an annoyance

PorscheDoc :

if it's coming from the engine compartment, you could have a hydraulic system leak, causing the steering fluid to run low, which should be dealt with promptly, so that you don't burn out a steering pump

PorscheDoc :

the ball joints are part of the control arm itself, so the arm will have to be replaced in order to eliminate the noise

i guess that because you cannot sit in my car and hear the noise, it would be difficult for you to identify the cause of my problem. the noise is definitely not a squeak, it is more like a continuous creaking noise. happens standing still or moving. and it is definitely coming from in front of the driver's compartment and occurs only when turning the steering wheel.

Definitely sounds like a lower ball joint from that description.

Relatively inexpensive repair. Labor time is about 1.5 hours, and the arms are $345 per side. Part number 997 341 053 03
