My answer may not be to your liking, but is a correct & honest answer.
Many times the only fix will be by Dealer or Shop, so please do not hold that against me.

there were a couple of different plugs

slide lock:

carefully inspect the plug & see if there is a "slide lock" under the tab that would need to press at the end of the plug.
If so, the "slide lock" needs to be pushed out, then the tab can be pressed

No slide lock:
press the tab down & pull plug out

No tab:
insert a small flatblade in top of plug to release the female part of the connector from the male (wire side) connector

have treid to methods you suggested to no avail. This is an '09 porsche cayenne s if it helps. I have accessed the horn through the wheel well so there is not much room to manuever. I can't imagine they made the horn so diofficult to remove. Is there some other simple fix other than taking it to a dealer for what should be a simple fix. Any further help you can provide would be much apreciated.

that was the diagram from 2009 service manual

TheFeamale Plug has to have some way of "retaining" the Mael Plug inside.
There are only 3 types
One with a press down tab with a slide lock under the tab to prevent coming off
One with a press down tab
Onde with a "pry up" tab on the opposite plug

very sorry I am not able to see it.
You can try to take a picture & post it here using the Tool Bar on your side

should be a paper clip icon
