Customer Question

I have a Sta-Rite Pool heater; it has worked fine, but today it is giving the code "R3" and will not fire and says "service heater." What is the problem?

Hi:

My name is Garry. I'll be glad to assist you with your heater.

The "R3" is not a fault code, it's a revision of the board and is normal. The "Service Heater" is what needs concern.

I will need more info to analyze what's happening, and help you go through the troubleshooting procedure.

Tell me if the green "Pool" or "Spa" light comes on, and if the blower is running before the "Service Heater" light comes on? Also, it would be helpful to know the model # ***** the heater, it's approximate age, and whether it runs on natural or propane gas?
