Do you see any numbers on the heater? Also is there a gas line going to heater? I am trying to determine if it is a heat pump or a gas powered heater. The white smoke may be steam or refrigerant if it is a heat pump.

If it is a heat pump. may be more feasible to repair but if gas, most likely will be better off replacing
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
it is a heatpump, 110 000 BTU

right now it works, fan turns but it does not heat anymore since the white smoke

I would recommend having an onsite tech diagnose. This may be a simple repair.

Does this smoke continue or was it for a brief time and stopped smoking?
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
brieftime and stopped
lasted about 30 seconds

The smoke was most likely the refrigerant gas. It is possible that a small refrigerant line has rubbed against another line or cabinet and rubbed a hole in line.If so, repair would be as simple as welding the line and recharging.
