I have a hot tub hot springs model that is at least 7 years

Customer Question

I have a hot tub hot springs model that is at least 7 years old. When I plug it in the heater appears to work. When I push button for jets the red light goes on and it completely short circuits tub in a few seconds. If I push jets button within one second of Turning jets on the tub won't short circuit. Regardless the jets do not turn on after pushing the button .

I think it is a hot springs soverign model

hello,
if it were an independent short we would trip regardless of timing
Please explain further on this quote..
I push jets button within one second of Turning jets on.......you are pressing jet button twice?
use reply please
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I was mistaken. a red light does not go on. The heater does work. If I push jets button it makes a noise as if attempting to start up but it will short out within 3-4 seconds. If I quickly hit jet button again within 2 seconds the jets startup noise will stop and tub won't short out. But the jets will nevertheless not turn on. It is a hot springs sovereign 120 volt with a Watkins 7000 jet pump wavemaster.

thank you...your jet pump is seized or shorted...but I am betting seized...you can try to free the motor and see if that remedies the situation
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
1-How do I free the motor?
2- if it is a short what do I do next ?
Thank you.
Expert:  Billy replied 1 year ago.
To free motor = simply accessing the motor and try to rotate impeller.
If shorted or seized permanently = replace the motor.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
1-Can I assess the motor myself without difficulty?
2-what is reasonable price to replace motor if I need to do that?
Expert:  Billy replied 1 year ago.
The pump mot diagnosis is easy.
Just unhook hot from the motor..if no trip you know the short is in motor.
Motors run from $150 - $400 depending on motor model number
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Unhook "hot"? From motor? What is that? Thank you.
Expert:  Billy replied 1 year ago.
The "hot" is the power wires to the motor.
Are you familiar with 220v power?
And are you comfortable doing this? If you are not accustomed to working with 220v I would call for service
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I am not familiar wih 220v so for that I will call for service. But before callin for service I would like to rotate the impeller myself to rule that out.
Can I easily access the motor and rotate the impeller myself?( I don't have any experience doing this)
Expert:  Billy replied 1 year ago.
you can....it doesnt take a lot to access just a spot to reach in and spin
we only have to move 1/4"
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sorry, i have been out of town.
I have looked at the motor and can't see any place to rotate the impeller. It is also a 110 volt model hot tub model made in 1994. Does that change anything. Do u still think it is most likely just a impeller that is temporarily seized or do u think motor pump has to be replaced since it is from 1994?

90% of the time the unit just needs to be moved to break the stationary rust hold.

Even a small movement quite often results in the unit running. I have one customer that I have to do this every spring...and then it runs fine all summer
