We have a Sta-rite Max E Pro 1.5hp that is 6 yrs old. We tried to prime it for the opening of the season and it started to smoke. We had water in the basket -my husband took it apart but there was no blockage. Should we just replace it or try to have a pool repair person look at it first? Also if we buy one online can a regular electrician install it? The electric is one of those metal tubes all hard wired.
Already Tried: taken it apart, primed
Hello, and welcome to Just Answer. I will be able to help you with this question. If the motor was smoking from the back of the motor, its very possible it may be time to have it tested/ replaced. Another possiblity is it was steam if water had been present, of if it was coming from the front of the motor or pump basket. This can happen if the pump has been let to run for a length of time with no water movement. If this has been the case, often times the seal on the suction inlet which is the pvc running into the front of the motor is damaged and a suction leak occures which will pull air into the syste m. This can make it difficult or impossible to prime the pump and move water. My suggestion would be to have a pool technicial inspect the pump and plumbing. They should also be able to replace the motor and an electrician and added cost would not be needed. I will be checking for a response from you if this answer did not completely explain or if you have any follow up questions.

Something I did not make clear in my answer, when calling a professional, verify the professional you have service the equipment is properly licensed to install the motor.
