I f**ked up and didn't mark which headbolts go where on a 1990 Pontiac sunbird
JA: Are you fixing your Sunbird yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yea I have a mechanic friend who told me what to do so I would do the work myself and wouldn't charge me. I had blown head gasket I switched that I just need to know where the head bolts go
JA: OK. To minimize me, please click the down arrow at the top right corner of this box.
Customer: Which one
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

What size engine do you have in your car?

Expert:  kalamykid replied 4 months ago.

Did you get a new set of head bolts to use to put this back together? The old bolts CAN NOT be reused.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
2.0L and yea they are new headbolts

And you have 2 with studs that stick up off of the top of them correct?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
7 short studs 2 long studs and the other is just like flat
Expert:  kalamykid replied 4 months ago.

The two long studded ones will go to the front just behind the cam gear 'bolts 7 and 8", the one with no stud Should be the one on the back left of the head and in the torque sequins is bolt number nine.

Is there a gasket in between the top of the head and the camshaft
Expert:  kalamykid replied 4 months ago.

No there is no gasket, You should use rtv black and put a small film n the matting surface between the cam carrier and the top of the head. It does not take much so do not over do it.

What are the torque specs?
Expert:  kalamykid replied 4 months ago.

Sorry for the delay, my internet is acting up. The head bolts have to be done in 3 stages. The first step is to torque them to 18 foot lbs, then You have to turn each bolt 180 degrees in 3 60 degree increments. Lastly you have to start the engine and let it get up to full operating temp and turn each head bolt 30 -50 degrees more.

Did you have any trouble getting it back together?
