Pontiac Problems? Ask a Mechanic for Answers ASAP
Welcome, I'm Chris (aka Moose), my normal schedule online is around lunch and after dinner past midnight.
What is the fuel pressure with the key on and when it starts and stalls?
Are there codes stored?
Once started can you get it to stay running with throttle applied?
I do not believe I can figure this out from this information. I will opt out.
Hi Im David. could you please be a bit more clear about whats going on with your vehicle? thank you.
ok, thanks for the info. when you try to start the car does the security light go out?
checking in to see how its going
if the security light isnt going out when you turn the key to the start position, your immobilizer has you locked out. so please make sure. "i cant really tell" isnt helping.
when you try to start the car, the security light should go completely out
ok. check the voltage at the battery with a meter. make sure its got a full charge at 12.5 vdc
ok, 12.5 is good. 14.7 is not. it should read 14.4...we'll worry about that when we get it started again.
your immobilizer has you locked out from starting the car if the security light doesnt go out while trying to start. disconnect the battery cables and hold them together for 20 seconds then reconnect them. see if that clear up any problems.
im back, had to run to hospital...were you able to do that?
thats fine, just let me know if it works.
the car started and shut down? how long before it shutdown?
have you tried to disconnect the battery again and see if that works again?
if it keeps starting every time you disconnect and reconnect the battery and that security light never goes completely out. it will be an immobilizer problem and only correctable at the deler level. they will need to recut and recode new keys.
no test for immobilizer. it either lets you start the car or doesn't. based on the security light not going out upon cranking
heres the keyless entry module/security module
in the trunk
ignition switch wouldnt do it. it starts, even though it stalls. lets not even worry about the security module anymore since it starts and runs til you shut it down. when it is running how does it act?
i think you got a computer issue. my friend.
because of the fact that the security light wont fully go off. but since its starting and running until you shut it off then that rules out the security system. im going to opt out and let someone else give it a shot. good luck
Hi, My name is ***** ***** for the delay.
I will do my best to assist you.
lets start from the beginning..
how and when did this problem first begin?
and now it just starts and stalls?
does the engine light stay on?if so,can you give me the trouble codes?
yes that will be fine
oki will answer as soon as i get on line
this is a quad driver code from the computer..
disconnect the wire harness from the computer and clean the terminals on the pcm[computer] and the harness plugs with electronics parts cleaner.
it is possible for you to have a bad pcm and needs to be replaced
PLEASE COPY AND PASTE the link below to your browser, I have uploaded more info on this there.please copy and paste the link below to your main browser[INTERNET EXPLORER ,Chrome or Firefox.]
if the link doesn’t work that way, try it this way
the code you gave me 1675 is a computer driver code
the terminals on the computer may be corroded and needs cleaned
the computer may be bad..or you could have a broken wire in the harness
click the link..i gave you the code definition and tests for 1675
it is a driver that controls the evap solenoid
if it is giving a bad driver,,and sense the car did sit for a while, the ternals on the computer may be dirty.may be why iit wont run also
if it still wont run after you check/clean the terminals at the computer..i think you may have a bad 7x crank sensor
yes,,the crank sensor or the ignition module on these can just quit..
clean the terminals on the computer and plug first
the ignition module is under the coils..it is what the coil mounts to
yes and injector pulse..
the computer[pcm]is under the dash on the passenger side
it isnt the immobilizer ,,the starter is turning
clean the terminals on the coomputer and the plugs to it..
this one doesnt have a passlock system started in i think 98
The Ignition Control Module is located under the coil pack assembly.
electronic parts cleaner should be fine
sorry,,this one does have a passlock..
does the security light stay on with the key on?
does it stay on in the run position,,not start?
3. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall. 4. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.[this is the security light] 5. When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds. 6. The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.
can you take the phone call option..i would like to talk to you
if the light never gos out or flashes..you may need to replace the key lock cylender
did the security light go out after those 10 minutes?
replace your key lock cylender
the key cyl;ender, the ignition switch and the pcm[main computer] are the componants of the passlock..the lock cylender can go bad and not let the light go out
i would think the lock cylinder..and the switch is also possible, the the lock cylinder is most likely..
there is no good test
it has a key lock cylender for the key..and it has the electrical ignition switch that the key lock turns..
The PASSLOCK TM System is designed to prevent vehicle operation if the mechanical key is not used to start the vehicle. The mechanical key, in normal operation, will turn the PASSLOCK TM Lock Cylinder. The PASSLOCK TM Lock Cylinder will relay a Resistance Code (R-Code) to the Instrument Cluster . The Instrument Cluster will determine the validity of the R-Code within a preset time window started from an Ignition Switch input and will send a coded password ***** the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). When the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives the correct code, it will allow the Fuel Injectors to operate normally. This system is similar in concept to the Passkey System; however, PASSLOCK TM eliminates the need for a key mounted resistor pellet. The components of this system are as follows: PASSLOCK TM Lock Cylinder, Ignition Switch, Instrument Cluster and Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
you nwant to check what plug?
have you replaced the lock cylinder?
yes,,you just need a multi meter to test the ohms..
you can have the lock cylender replaced quicker than you can do the tests
i dont know of a good way to test the lock when it sets the passlock..
after you replace it,you will need to do the passlock relearn procedure
you need to replace that lock..
yes,it is possible for the switch itself to do this also..
agian,i am going on the security light staying on,,if the light isnt staying on,,the problem may not be the security at all..and may be the ncrank sensor or the ignition module
again, the cluster, switch.computer and lock cylinder are your security components.
if the security light is staying on and not going off when doing the relearn..the common thing to cause this is the lock cylinder..again,,either of these could be the problem.
if the security light isnt staying on,then your problem may be the crank sensor or the ignition module going on what you are telling me...
if the dashis acting up,,then you may have a bad ignition switch or bad cluster..
sense you are talking about the cluster acting up..i would replace the switch first
yes,,and yes you will need to do the relearn for it to start
if you got them, may as well replace them both while you are working on it
that is correct.
try the switch first.
Remove both battery cables from the battery, turn on the ignition, touch and hold both the - and the + cables together for 5 seconds, turn off the ignition, then re-install them back to the battery..then do the relearn
let me know if this fixed the problem
?/..no..i sent you the relearn procedure earlier
