Customer Question

the top is in the trunk, but the trunk will not open, saying top inoperable, trunk open
JA: Have you tried silicone spray or WD-40?
Customer: it clicks, but when the top went down (into trunk) the trunk closed weird, seemed to shift
JA: What is the model/year of your Pontiac?
Customer: 2007 g6 convertible
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes, hoping to at least get the top back up. We have disconnected the battery, taken the back seats out to see if there is an emergency trunk release
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: It does click when trunk release is pushed. The top is in the trunk so there is limited access even with the back seats removed

Hello and welcome to Justanswer!

If you're seeing a message that the top is inoperable it's because the module has seen an issue and is preventing operation to prevent damage. The problem may be a mechanical failure or electrical, either way if it doesn't see all components in the correct state it isn't going to allow the top to operate.

The first step will be to use a scan tool to see what fault codes are setting and then testing can be done from there. do you know what codes have set?

It is saying inoperable because "trunk ajar," but the trunk is not open and will not open.

You either have a bad trunk ajar switch or the switch circuit is shorted to ground then.

When the top went down the trunk seemed to shift slightly to the side when it closed, which we are thinking is why it won't open. Where is the trunk ajar switch?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 1 month ago.

There may be damage to the latch then, or something psychically blocked the lid from closing correctly and the latch isn't actually fully closed.

The ajar switch is part of the latch.

is there a way to fix this when the trunk won't open and top won't go back up?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 1 month ago.

The only way to begin diagnosing the problem is to get the trunk open.

That is my basic question. Is there any way to get the trunk open?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 1 month ago.

It's going to have to be forced or possibly cut open. If you push down on it while turning the key and then pull up does anything happen?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
no, nothing happens
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 1 month ago.

Did the key work in the trunk before? Have you tried a second key?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
there isn't a key spot, only the key fob and trunk release button
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 1 month ago.

I'm showing a lock cylinder present.

If it doesn't see the ajar switch is open and trunk closed then it isn't going to power the release solenoid. You can try grounding the orange/black wire in pin 18 of body controller connector 1 to simulate the switch being closed and then press the trunk release. If that doesn't work then a scan tool can be tried to actuate the relay and see if it will open.
