Cant trigger release in lock cylinder. Is a key necessary
JA: Is the key stripped or worn?
Customer: One is and one isnt. I messed the tumblers up
JA: What is the model/year of your Pontiac?
Customer: 2001
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I am. I have removed cover and am at the point of putting a piece of wire in top hole to release cylinder but cant find release
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: Just that my keys will not go in

Yes you have to have the key in the switch and must be able to turn he lock to remove the cylinder. If our key will not work, you will have to replace the housing as well as the cylinder.
