I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire GT. It will start, idle 5

Customer Question

I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire GT. It will start, idle for about 5 seconds then sputters and dies.
In the last month I've had the ignition coils and car worked great. Now im having issues again. I cleaned and replaced the idle air control valve and same problem. I then replaced the idle air control valve with a new one and still won't stay running. No codes are are showing up.

can you keep it running working the gas pedal ?

if not can you keep it running spraying carb cleaner or starting fluid into the throttle body butter fly ?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
As soon as I touch the gas pedal the engine dies.
Haven't tried starting flud.
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

usually these issues are low fuel pressure issues

see if you can keep it running on starting fluid to keep it from dying if you can then either the fuel filter is plugged or the fuel pumps are usually bad causing this issue

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Fuel pump and filter were both replaced 3 months ago (7k miles ago)
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

ok then lets see if adding fuel will keep it running

and at least narrow this down to a fuel issue or not

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sprayed starting fluid in the intake and still won't run.
I'm thinking MAP sensor possibly?
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

it could be but usually adding fuel would compensate enough for a bad MAP reading

lets see if any other experts have any ideas

hang on another expert will reply back to you

Hi my name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist with this here.If at any time you feel I cannot help let me know.

Is or has the check engine light come on with this issue at all here or have you had the fault codes checked at all?

Let me know so we can continue, thanks Pete.

Only code that pops up is P440

O.k.,if this model uses the mass air flow sensor (I believe it does but my info shows two options) with the key off unplug the mass air flow sensor connector and then turn on the key and see if it starts then and let me know.

Thanks Pete

I'll do that when I get home from work.
Thank you. I'll let you know.

O.k.,let me know if this does anything.

OK so I don't see an MAF, only an MAP and air temp sensor. So I unplugged the air temp and same thing, runs a few seconds and dies. Starting fluid keeps it running a few seconds longer.

Can you test one one or more cylinders to see if spark is cutting out when this issue occurs or right before the engine stalls out and let me know?
