Customer Question

I have a 2002 Pontiac Montana Van. Just recently it has begun not starting sometimes. It is an intermittent problem and my mechanic cannot seem to figure it out. Fuel Pump Relay was replaced and the water pump. It is still doing the same thing after putting over $1500 in repairs into it. I have never had any problems with this vehicle before this. Can you shed any light onto what may be the problem?

Country: United States
Make: Pontiac
Model: Montana Van XL

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will do my best to help you with your Pontiac problem.

When the engine does not start, does the starter still engage and turn the engine over?

yes

Check the harness connector under the van, just behind drivers seat area. The fuel tank harness comes forward and plugs in there. It is very common for this connector to get filled with moisture and corrosion. Dry and clean this connection and then pack it full of dielectric grease to keep out moisture in the future.

If the connector is not the problem what would be your next possibility ?

Then I would suspect a failing crankshaft position sensor on the back side of the engine block. There are 2 crank sensors, the 7X sensor on the back side of the block is the one that you will be concerned with.
