There is a common issue in these transmission that results in a whine and the lurch, which is a harsh shifting. It is a sticking pressure control solenoid.. They tend to stick and cause a high pressure which causes the whining. The repair for this is to replace the solenoid. This is behind the side cover of the transmission. The part is 45 or so, but you do need to remove the transmission part way to get the cover off.
'k the transmission fluid also looks dirty and there is really no whining involved when shifting just a hard jerk
could this still be the solenoid?
yes, high pressure makes the hard shift and it may not be stuck full open then.
What colour is the fluid?
brownish red and the transmission was supposed to have been flushed and new fluid and filter put in when we bought it at 43,000 miles we now have 82,000

since this is the weekend and I cannot get it into the shop til Monday...is it okay to drive? or will I be sitting beside the road?

brown is burnt clutches so possibly a soft rebuild since you are catching it before total failure.
what is meant by soft rebuild
clutches seals, some steels, no hard parts like gears.
This may only be around 1200 then but a full reman from gm is about 2400.

would it be better to just get a new transmission rather than have it rebuilt...I have to take my husband to the doctor that is 300 miles away one way once a month..I need something reliable.....
If it was mine, I would get the reman, 100000 mile warranty and 3 years is a great warranty and they are a quality rebuild.
